I was working late on a website last night and about 1am I took Sophie out to pee before bed. She went right away but shifted strangely while she was peeing – at the time I thought she was too close to the fence and just backing up, so dismissed it.

She came in, I got her bedtime treat and we headed to bed in the dark. Gave her the treat and got ready for bed myself.

By the time I was ready she was already in her bed. I petted her a bit and got in bed. Something smelled strange though. Couldn't quite place it – kinda like stinkweed. Though maybe it was her breath after cleaning her bum..? But I was exhausted and my eyes were burning so I tried to go to sleep. Soon I hear a neighbors car alarm, ugh… what is this 1980? But there was that smell again. She must have stepped in something.

I got up and put a flashlight on her – globs of wet shit on her bed, and at least one foot clumped with it. Lovely. And the smell was overpowering now. She looked at me like she knew something was wrong and just sat still. Grabbed a trash can and toilet paper and picked up the poo and wiped her foot off – it was squished between her toes… she sat
still and let me work.

OMG the smell was sickening. I searched the rest of the house and found the trail from the backdoor all the way to the bedroom, every 3 feet or so, a splat to wipe up. Rug, wood floor, tile, carpet, everything.

Now it's bath time. Got her in the tub with a few inches of warm water and wiggled her offending foot around to shake off the poo in the water. It did and now it is a tub of poo soup.

The smell continues. A couple of tub empties and rinses later and she seems clean enough. Another inspection of the trail with a few more clean up spots and we are off to bed again – though I stuck her bed and the trash can in the garage – we'll need new items there. I can still smell it...

I realized I didn’t have a pen on me

I needed to sign a paper at work and send it in to corporate (just a little mix-up with behavior, no big deal really), and I realized I didn't have a pen on me. And when I stopped and thought about it, I couldn't remember the last time I had a pen on me –or even had need of a pen… Years ago, I always had a pen in my pocket –keys, wallet and pen –always. Now it is keys, wallet and Smartphone. What a digital world we live in.

A MotoGP international motorcycle racer I watch (Marco Simoncelli), was killed Sunday in Malaysia when he slid over in a turn and two racers following collided with him and his bike (his helmet came off in the process).

Amazingly, I hadn't heard about the incident, and I didn't know about his death until I watched the recorded race last night. The race started as usual after an overview of the field, Marco promoting his new website, poised for a competitive race, starting on the second row. All was going well for Marco just a few laps in, battling for 4th position, when he innocently slid the bike over ever so slowly, yet directly in the racing path, and the horrific collisions ensued. Everyone immediately knew it was bad (especially heart-wrenching was a camera shot of his girlfriend's reaction after the crash, after just having shown her smiling and waving seconds earlier), and there was stunned silence while waiting for news.

They had stopped the race with red flags and now showed other riders sitting in their garages blankly staring. I stared too, at the screen, frozen in dis-belief, eyes wide, open mouth covered with hand. Waiting, hoping. Race Direction eventually posted our worst fears - he had succumbed to his injuries. I immediately began sobbing, still trying to comprehend.

There only 16 riders at this top level and though hugely popular internationally, my 2 friends and I are some of the loyal, but low in numbers, US fans, so they are all like family to us and I guess that is why it is hitting me so hard. He was only 24 and a new rising star in the series -full of talent, good looks and charisma. His riding style was often considered too agressive, but he was adjusting as time passed and his drive and desire to win remained. He had just placed second at the previous race in Australia and was expected to battle for the win in Malaysia.

Creating a Ping Pong Singles Championship Trophy

(I forgot I documented this in pictures until today so I am presenting them now)

Ping Pong Tournament at work a few months ago - since we were hosting a singles as well as doubles contest this time around and we didn't have a singles trophy, we needed one. Even if I wanted to spend money on it, it would probably be cheesy and stale so I checked to see what I had on hand.

a paddle
ball
an old trophy base (sorry Brandon)
hardware
adhesives

now to attach them I have a bit of hardware that I rounded which should fit in the handle and secure a threaded bolt shaft to tie it all together

stick the paddle handle in a vise and drill a neat hole as centered and vertical as possible

test cram the hardware in the hole

add the assumed finishing hardware

eyeballing the assembly shows i need to shorten the column (since I don't have a longer bolt)

we'll cut that later - first prep for hardware securing by taping the areas I don't want to get goo on it

we'll be using reliable old jb weld

mixing equal parts resin and hardener

mix with a wooden paint stick

until a consistent grey color

it will be fairly liquid to start but it hardens quickly so I must drip and cram as much as I can get into the gap between hardware and handle quickly

it tends to settle after a bit so I keep adding more using gravity as a helper

I have also prepared a place to hang it as it hardens completely

it hardens pretty quickly

as it hardens I begin to cut away the excess

it has a somewhat leathery consistency at first but is much harder after curing, so I find it best to trim excess before fully curing

need to get it nice and clean so the parts mate up flush

then it is ready to cure overnight

now to cut the column

first thought: easy hacksaw cut

kinda looks crooked

yup - it's crooked

breakout the chop saw and get it straight

test assemble the pieces, clear the tape and final assembly

Add a drop of clear auto adhesive to secure a ball

let it cure overnight

ready for labeling

A DIY Tip for smooth fast mouse movement on a plain desktop (no mousepad)

I like the smooth, quick response of a mouse on a plain desktop surface and it does not limit movement to the size of the mouse pad. But eventually within a few weeks, the little plastic feet build up with dirty, sticky desktop debris which hinders performance. I found a simple way to refresh that clean feeling and movement with standard 3x3 Post-its^®, of which I have an abundant supply.

Take your standard 3x3 Post-it^® and cut on the sticky side about 1/3 of the way in as shown (I have been known to just tear it when needed, but a nice cut is pleasing to the eye).

Then, cut the entire sticky portion from the rest and either discard the non-sticky portion or use it to play tricks on un-suspecting Post-it users.

Apply the sticky pieces to the mouse feet as shown, the bigger piece to the dual feet side. A stickler might round the cormers, but I have found they do not interfer with movement or performance.

After a few weeks of use, the paper will build up the same debris and as the mouse begins to stick to the desktop, it is time for another application. Grab the Post-its^®!

Had a road rage incident on the way to work -details cannot be printed here... Then on the way home, this adventure: Ran out of gas at the green dot and the closest station was the red dot... so I pushed my 366 lb GSX-R 750 (dry weight since it was EMPTY!) 1.7 miles on the shoulder of the 70mph 121 Tollway in 6pm, 100 degree Texas heat. It is elevated, so no way out. Map shows 2 min by car- it's 1 hour by motorcycle push. Also had to cross the gauntlets of 1 exit to south 35 and 2 entrance ramps (4 lanes) from 35 (little excitement here as 1 car locked up brakes screeching past another that was slowed probably staring at me). When I finally got to the gas station, I filled up myself with 1 bottle Gatorade and 1/2 bottle water - I wore the other half. Luckily, once the bike had gas in it, she ran fine. Good news is I now know exactly how much fuel my tank holds: 4.848 gallons@$18.42. As far as how I ran out of gas? My instrument cluster is dead and I now know my low fuel light is dead as well.

My first HotRod - I literally drove the wheels off this 76 Buick Skyhawk v6 5-speed - found this picture of it from a period about 2 major crashes before its demise. They finally had to haul it away... after one too many races where i had to win by taking the gravel shoulder...
I did learn many of my mechanical, repair and "rig" skills with her since I couldn't afford to pay anyone to do it (there is a reason the shot is from this side). Add to that, the road trips, camping trips, the stereo mod's, the dating trials, floods (water outside was up to my window and rising fast inside), and countless other experiences -hmmm, there may be a book here - Yes, the education I gained from this car over the years would cost thousands in the academic world.
Wow, just looking at her, I can practically take her apart bolt by bolt in my mind.

Killers take it 2 to 1!
Killers, John Haras (2011 Singles champion) and Rick Angell defeat The Good Guys, Bobby Harbin and Eddie Narvaez in a hard-fought 3 game Series Final. Many strong volleys dominated the games and a few miracle shots helped Killers overcome the last tournament champions, The Good Guys. The Doubles Championship trophy will be on display at the TRS DFW site upon completing a national tour of the player's home towns.

Sweaty and very relieved, The Killers' Rick Angell stated, "I did not want to see it go to another series - we had to beat them now or risk a momentum shift. We didn't talk about it, but this was definitely a grudge match for us, since these guys beat us in the finals last time around - barely", he added.

John Haras, beaming brightly during the multi-national post-match news conference, "It was a great match. Hard fought on both sides. I could feel the nerves from all players. Especially mine!"

The Good guys, Harbin was gracious, "You win some and you lose some...today we were beaten by a worthy opponent..Congratulations to Rick and John ..job well done."

Narvaez, normally shy of the media, kept his comments brief, "The better team won...", as he slowly zipped up his custom Stiga paddle case and left the arena.

A big thanks to all players who participated and made this tournament rock! Lots of good, new talent out there!

In a fitting finals matchup the undefeated John Haras met Jim Krueger, who's only match defeat came via John earlier in the tournament. John won the "pong" to start the service and also won the first game. In a completely uncharacteristic move, Jim stepped outside his comfort zone and left the defensive-based, lay-back approach which carried him to the finals for a surprisingly aggressive attack format. Though he won the second game, it seemed Jim realized he had to try something new to beat the as yet undefeated Haras. "I went on the offensive but it wasn't enough", Jim shrugged after the match. John, hoping to go completely undefeated, was not quite able to, "Jim definitely has some game to hand me my first defeat…and thanks for the charity".
